We always get told that we need to reduce the use of soft plastics and reduce product packaging, but, a lot of people don't actually know how to achieve it.
This video just explains a couple of small things that we have been able to do in our household. How do you actually eliminate Glad Wrap and paper towels from your home? For example, we use Bee's Wax Fabric to wrap our food and we have cut up and hemmed old tea towels to clean up mess with and also use to wipe hands.
My wife makes her own general purpose cleaner. It actually works better than anything we have bought, and yes, it cuts grease from the counters.
Recipe to make 500ml's: 2 Tablespoons of Castile soap, 25 Drops of your favorite essential oil, and top up with distilled water. Straight into a Pump bottle (Glass) and you're ready to go.
If you need to buy cleaning supplies, buy the non-phosphorus bio-degradable concentrates. Buy a box that will do 100 washes, not 10 washes. You'll save money and produce only a tenth of the packaging waste, and you're being kind to our lakes.
In the times of COVID-19, we certainly need to be more tolerant of packaged foods, because it does give us an extra layer of protection. But, don't put that in the red bin. Use the RedCycle service at Woolies and Coles. It's not out of the way, you're going back there next week anyway.
Most weeks, we end up with 1 single rubbish bag in the red bin (a fast breakdown biodegradable green bag). Our recycle will be quite full, and we will have our Redcycle Plastics ready to go. I know that some of these things are basic, especially for you Alan, being that it's so close to your own heart. But some people give you a vacant look and just don't understand how it's done, and, it will save them time/money/and waste by not having to repurchase these items each week.
